A Family at fireside Through a Painting
Its hard not to love the Romare Bearden exhibition. His style of the 1930s in each work of fine art sticks in the sweethearts head. The characterisations depose suck the viewing audience into the social issues that he creates by a stroke of a brush or maybe using his collage techniques. He defines himself as an artist by creating visual recollections of the south pinched from both memories and stories passed from generations. He could easily be defined as an adventurous painter. His painting called The Family (1941) is striking. He uses the Cubist style to pose the family in the painting. The Family establishes the concept of a family with its many complex kinship and rituals one can share.
This masterpiece sat still against the contend right underneath the sign stating, Romare Bearden Southern Recollections. It is as if the painting is a target that turns eyes into a magnet that cant help but follow. The painting gives mixed signals and thats what draws so much attention to this masterpiece. The potato, salt shaker, fork, and lamp sit so restful on the table, but Romare Bearden still indispensablenesss the viewer to actually open their eyes and look at the painting.
The first liaison you look at is the husbands large debate blocking out the women and the baby. Do the wife and baby heart a feeling of rejection from the husband? This thus leads to the womens miserable face and the babys face as if its hiding from the father. This painting creates some kind of triangle that the viewers eyes begin to move to. The husbands hand, to the wifes face, and then ending to the baby, the viewer then finds their eyes lingering back to the husbands hand. Its like a game. Upon closer examination, another family portrait is panoptical within this space that overlooks the family table. This drew a question, what does this represent?
