My group consisted of Sine and I; we distinguishable to choose a section of the play from Act II from pages 58-59. In this section there were three main characters , and just two actors. These three characters are the near important, witty and fantastic characters in the play. We used this to our advantage to show the differences and similarities between these characters, as we played them all with only two people. We chose this section because it reflects the pick pop ideas in the play.
The protagonist Jack Worthing, who was found in a handbag in a cloakroom of a railway station of London, had grown up to be a adept adult male who is a major(ip) landowner. He is known as Ernest in town and Jack in the country and he faces many obstacles to win over Gwendolen his true love. One major obstacle is Gwendolens mother, Lady Bracknell, a snobby, controlling and exacting women with only one primary goal in life, to embrace off her daughter into an honorable, wealthy family just as she had. However, as Jack is incapable of giving Lady Bracknell a consummate overview of his family background, he does not fit into her list of eligible youth men. As she is narrow-minded and fond of ignorance, it allows her to say the most unwittingly humorous speeches about what she believes is absolutely right.
Finally Algernon, who is the charming, witty, ladies man of the play, makes sharp comments that either make no sense or are unintentionally clever and profound. Like Jack, he overly has a fictional character called Mr. Bunbury, (who is always on the bound of his deathbed) whom he uses to his advantage as an excuse to cover up missing any of his obligations. This section touches upon all of these keys ideas, bringing out the Irony of the play.
We achieved this by using certain tones in our junction in the way that Wilde has written it. We put on a matter of fact but sarcastic, obnoxious and arrogant tone.
