The war on drugs has inadvertently become a war on women and has overcrowded our states women prisons. Over 60% of the women in custody are serving sentences that are alcohol and drug-related convictions. Womens rate of incarceration has increased dramatically, tripling in the stick out decade. Many incarcerated women either abuse or are devoted to alcohol and/or other drugs and continue to use and abuse, throughout the duration of their stay. Unfortunately, drugs are still available in prisons and believe it or not are very delicate to come by. Trafficking is done in umpteen ways, whether it is through prison guards, visitors, outreach programs, postal services, etc.
Undeniably there is not whole a crack our prison systems, but there is a desperate need for substance abuse counseling for many of the offenders. Fortunately, the Indiana Department of Corrections offer Counseling for the amelioration of not only the institution and the offenders personal well-being, but for society upon the offenders release to reduce recidivism rates in our communities across the state of Indiana. The communities we all live in, and call inhabitation.
I chose to set up an interview with someone who has in person impacted my life in such a life-changing way.

Her name is Courtney Ashbrock; she is active with the Indiana department of corrections and holds the job title as a substance abuse counselor. She counsels some of the most unseen, neglected, misunderstood, women at the Indiana state womens prison. This facility is a utmost security prison and nearly provides housing for majority of the head hardened women criminals of the state, down to the ones who might not necessarily deserve to even be there.
