Marcus Aurelius
(121-180 CE)
When trying to determine which philosopher I would research, I remembered the following pass from the Silence of the Lambs. This exchange is between Hannibal Lecter and the rookie FBI agent Clarice Starling.
Hannibal. Lecter: prototypical principles, Clarice. Read Marcus Aurelius. Of each particular thing, ask: What is it in itself? What is its constitution? What does he do, this man you seek?
Clarice Starling: He kills women.
Hannibal Lecter: No, that is incidental. What is the first and leash thing he does, what needs does he serve by killing?
Clarice Starling: Anger, social resentment, sexual frustration
Hannibal Lecter: No, he covets. Thats his nature. And how do we begin to covet, Clarice? Do we seek out things to covet? give birth an effort to answer, now.
~ Silence of the Lambs (1991)
I took the advice of Lecter and decided to read near Marcus Aurelius. Marcus Aurelius was most famous for his writing the Meditations and for being a corking emperor. The Meditations have been used over the centuries as a root of wisdom. This is an essential text for everyone interested in philosophy.
