Bauxite Mining

Introduction
Bauxite is the mineral from which the metal aluminium is obtained. Australia has vasts deposits of bauxite and in the pricey Range of western Australia there are hundreds of millions of tonnes of this ore.



Australia is the worlds heavy(p)gest producer of bauxite, supllying more than 40 per cent of current demand. Bauxite from the dearie Range is mined by AlCOA( AluminiumCompany of America ). Bauxite should contain at least 30 per cent alumina to make mine profitable. Alumina is a white powder.
Alcoa of Australia operates open-cut mines at Jarrahdale, Del Park, Huntly and Wagerup in the positron emission tomography Range of Western Australia. The bauxite mined at Jarrahdale is refined at Kwinana.

History
Australia first made aluminium at Bell Bay, Tasmania, in 1955. All the bauxite was brought from Malaysia because it was thought that Australia had no bauxite worth mining.
In 1955, big deposits of bauxite were found at Weipa in Queensland and the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory. By 1960, it was also decided to begin mining bauxite in the devout Ranges of Western Australia. Australia is now mining about one-third of all the worlds bauxite.
