Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat

The audience is made pick of the action by being the audience for Weiss's play and the audience for the Marquis de Sade's play. Weiss involves the viewer in the process of putting on the play, of watching the play, and of being responsible for the inmates who by the end ordain revolt. The director of the clinic speaks directly to the audience as if that audience were read at Charenton at the end of the eighteenth century. The events that took roll with Corday and Marat were non that distant in time from the era of the play, and the spirit of vicissitude was still strong. At the same time, the idealism of the revolution had been generally lost in the bloodbath and internal struggling that took place in the years after, and it is precisely that conflict that is involved in the assassination of Marat.

The theatricality of the play is noted first as the Director of the Clinic of Charenton speaks to the audience and identifies the action while also whirl a sense of how to treat patients:

We're modern enlightened and we don't agree

with lockup up patients. We p quote therapy

through education and especially artistic creation (4).

The action of the internal play is set as Marat is in his bath awaiting the arrival of Charlotte Corday.

Duperret expresses the sort of innovation to which they all aspire:

Four years after we started fighting

A contrast is created between the support offered by Marat's followers and the constitution of life after the Revolution, as expressed by the patients:

once we thought a few hundred corpses would be enough
